Purpose of the Catalogue
The BOQEQ Public Domain Literature Library provides editorial guidance for a curated selection of public-domain texts. The catalogue is designed to help readers navigate 93 works of poetry, drama, and ballads by offering contextual notes that explain structure, voice, and historical background. It does not serve as a comprehensive archive but as a reading companion.
Scope and Selection
Works are chosen from Project Gutenberg’s holdings, focusing on English-language poetry and dramatic texts from the 14th to early 20th centuries. Selection prioritizes editions with editorial value—such as variant readings, translator prefaces, or critical apparatus—and works that illustrate distinct poetic forms or historical moments.
Source Attribution
All texts are sourced from Project Gutenberg and are in the public domain. Each catalogue entry includes the original author and, where applicable, editors, translators, or illustrators as recorded by Project Gutenberg. No works under current copyright are included.
Bibliographic Records
Every book record contains: title, author(s), publisher (Project Gutenberg), keywords, target-reader field, and a catalogue note. The keywords describe subjects, genres, or historical periods. The catalogue note is an editorial description highlighting notable textual features, such as meter, diction, allegorical structure, or manuscript history.
Category Assignment
Categories are thematic groupings intended as navigation aids, not definitive literary judgments. The four categories—A Guide to Poetry, Drama & Performance, Fantasy Juvenile Worlds, Love, Family & Society: Sources & Perspectives, and World Events in Context: Sources & Perspectives—overlap; many works could reasonably appear in multiple categories. The assignment is based on the dominant theme or form of each work.
Editorial Reading Context
